What a home energy audit costs in Iowa

Across Iowa, a diagnostic home energy audit runs anywhere from $250 to $1,200 — because most auditors price by square footage. We don’t. Every audit is a flat $699, any size home.

What most Iowa auditors charge by home size

Most auditors price by square footage — roughly $0.17 to $0.40 per square foot for a true diagnostic audit. Here’s what size-based pricing looks like across Iowa, and where our flat rate lands:

Home sizeTypical Iowa price range
Under 1,500 sq ft$250 – $450
1,500 – 2,500 sq ft$300 – $700
2,500 – 3,500 sq ft$450 – $1,000
Over 3,500 sq ft$600 – $1,200+

Watch what’s included. These ranges cover a true diagnostic audit. A basic Level 1 walk-through runs $100–$250 but skips the testing that actually finds air leaks.Ranges reflect published industry cost data for diagnostic-level audits, reviewed July 2026. Actual quotes vary by scope, location, and testing included.
Under 1,500 sq ft and comparing prices? The low end of that range usually buys a walk-through — a visual look and general advice. Our $699 is the same full diagnostic on every home: measured blower-door air leakage, infrared thermal imaging of every wall and ceiling, and a written plan ranked by payback. On a small home the testing takes nearly as long as on a big one, which is why cut-rate audits cut the testing instead. We don’t.
Our pricing

Flat $699 — whether it’s a 900 sq ft bungalow or a 4,000 sq ft two-story

Most homeowners call us before spending $8,000–$30,000 on HVAC, insulation, windows, or comfort repairs. A $699 diagnostic audit helps you avoid fixing the wrong thing first.

We don’t price by square footage. Every audit is $699 flat, anywhere in our Eastern Iowa service area. Larger homes aren’t penalized — and smaller homes aren’t shortchanged: a 900 sq ft bungalow gets the same blower door, the same thermal scan, and the same prioritized report as a 4,000 sq ft two-story. Every audit gets the full diagnostic workup:

Included

Blower Door Testing

The house goes under negative pressure so we can measure exactly how much it leaks — not guess. How blower door testing works →

Included

Infrared Thermal Imaging

A calibrated thermal camera turns missing insulation and hidden air leaks into a picture you can point at. About thermal imaging →

If needed

Duct Testing

Available if your home needs it — typically when ducted heating and cooling runs through unconditioned spaces like an attic or crawlspace. We’ll tell you up front whether it’s worth adding.

Why the spread

Why audit prices vary so much

The spread comes down to what’s included. A walk-through visual inspection is cheap but limited. A diagnostic audit adds blower door testing to measure air leakage, a room-by-room inspection, and a prioritized report of fixes ranked by payback.

That’s the difference between “your attic could use insulation” and knowing exactly where your house leaks and what fixing it is worth.

Free options exist. Green Iowa AmeriCorps offers free walkthrough assessments open to the public, subject to local team availability, with priority given to certain households — and some utilities offer free walk-throughs as well. These are not comprehensive diagnostic audits, but they can be a reasonable starting point.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home energy audit cost in Iowa?
Between $250 and $1,200 depending on home size and audit depth. Most Iowa homeowners pay $350–$700 for a diagnostic audit with blower door testing. We charge a flat $699 for any size home.
What’s included in your $699 audit?
A comprehensive BPI-certified diagnostic audit, including blower door testing, infrared thermal imaging, and a prioritized report of recommended improvements. Duct testing is available if your home needs it.
Why $699 when the table says small homes can cost $250–$450?
Those lower prices typically buy a Level 1 walk-through or a reduced-scope assessment — no blower door measurement, no infrared. The diagnostic work is what finds the problems, and it takes roughly the same equipment and time regardless of square footage. If a visual-only assessment fits your budget, free options exist — but if you’re about to spend real money on insulation or HVAC, measurement is what keeps you from fixing the wrong thing.
Is duct testing included in the $699?
Duct testing is available as an add-on if your home needs it — typically homes with ducted HVAC systems where ducts run through unconditioned spaces like an attic or crawlspace. We’ll tell you up front whether it’s worth adding.
Are free energy audits available in Iowa?
Sometimes. Green Iowa AmeriCorps offers free walkthrough assessments open to the public, subject to local team availability, with priority given to certain households — and some utilities offer free walk-throughs as well. These are not comprehensive diagnostic audits, but they can be a reasonable starting point.
Is there a federal tax credit for energy audits?
The federal 25C credit (30% up to $150) applied only to audits completed by December 31, 2025. Audits done in 2026 no longer qualify, though rebates may apply to improvements the audit recommends.
How long does a home energy audit take?
Plan on 2–4 hours on site depending on home size, plus a written report afterward.

One price. Every diagnostic tool. No surprises.
